Chlorine in Swimming Pool trigger allergies and asthma

Sports pool is a fun activity and can make the body relax. But a recent study shows that, swimming in a pool containing chlorine can increase the likelihood that a child had asthma and allergies.

"Recent data clearly show that airway irritation in swimmers of chlorination products contained in the water and air swimming pool can cause a strong additive effect on the development of asthma and respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis," said Dr. Alfred Bernard, a Toksikologis from Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, Germany, as quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (15/9/2009).

The team, headed by Bernard said there is little doubt that swimming pools contain chlorine which is an important factor involved in the occurrence of allergic diseases. In this study compared the health of 733 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years of swimming pool chlorine, compared with 114 control teenagers swimming in the swimming pool sanitation.

In children who are sensitive to allergies, swimming in the pool that contains chlorine significantly enhance the relationship between asthma and respiratory allergies such as reported in the journal Pediatrics.

In addition, the sensitive teenager who has a chance of 3.3 to 6.6 times higher fever when swimming in the pool chlorine and allergic rhinitis increased by 2.2 to 3.5 times if you swim more than 1,000 hours in the pool of contain chlorine.

For example, children and teenagers who swim in chlorine pool for 100 to 500 hours of his life, gained 22 of the 369 children, or 6 percent had asthma. While less than 100 hours is only 2 of 144 children or 1.8 percent. The number of children who had asthma will increase along with increasing the number of hours of swimming. While the swimming pool sanitation does not affect the risk of asthma and allergies.

Researchers believe the cause is the chlorine which can be dangerous in the water or flying through the air at the surface of the pool, thus causing changes in the respiratory tract. For those who have sensitive skin are also very vulnerable to allergies due to direct contact with the chlorine in the pool.

Before swimming in a pool containing chlorine, you should find out beforehand whether the child has sensitive skin and has a history of asthma in the family or not. So that does not cause the situation becomes more severe.
